Aberdeen's Under-19s lost out in extra time after going down to ten men against a typically physical Hearts Youth team in the quarter final of the Scottish Youth Cup.
Hearts were first to strike, with Thorarinsson scoring in the ninth minute. Aberdeen equalised with a terrific goal from Andrew Considine in twenty minutes, and that's how it stayed until half-time. Hearts then caught the Dons youngsters cold again, with a goal from McLaughlin only two minutes after the restart, but Dons starlet Andrew Bagshaw equalised again just after the hour mark. The game to-and-fro'd for the remainder of the ninety minutes, and just before the end of normal time, young Ciaran Donnelly can count himself unlucky to pick up his second booking of the game and not return for the extra time period. Hearts took advantage of the extra man, as Sives netted the winner just after the start of the second period of extra time.
There is talent and promise in the Aberdeen youth side, but perhaps they need a bit of the tougher, more cynical edge that Hearts and the other Central Belt teams can muster. Perhaps this is what Jimmy Calderwood meant about us Aberdonians being too soft.
