Aberdeen fans teams Inter MaLamb and Rob Roy Reds joined forces this weekend to play in Worldnet 2002 a supporters tournament attended by over 1000 players from over 60 teams and Aberdeen came out on top in the Sports Interactive Worldnet 2002 plate competition. This came obout despite a very poor start to the competition losing their opening two games to Middlesboro and Reading, a hastily arranged friendly against Sheffield Wednesday got the team into winning ways leading to a 1-0 win over West Ham to complete the Saturday competition in third place and avioiding the dreaded 8:00 start on Sunday. Sunday morning got off to the best possible start with a comprehensive 3-0 win over Huddersfield giving a last 16 play off against last years whipping boys York City who had obviuosly improved taking Aberdeen to extra time and finally losing 4-3 in a penalty shoot out. The scene was set for a quarter final against old friends Dunfermline with a repeat of the previous game going all the way to another penalty shootout winning 5-4. By now the team were feeling the pace and and had to request time to recover before a semi final place against a very strong Millwall team who once more took it all the way to extra time and a third consecutive penalty shoot out with Aberdeen winning 9-8 (memories of 1990).
The final was against another familiar team Motherwell meaning that whatever happened history would be made with the winners being the first Scottish victors in the tournaments history. Both teams were feeling the pace with the game being forced into extra time after a cracking 1-1 game with Aberdeen taking the trophy in the last minute of extra time on a golden goal. A superb hard fought victory after a long hard day in the Leeds sunshine sees the guys add another supporters trophy to the seasons tally. Well done to all 16 guys who played their part in a brilliant wekend of football.
