It has been reported today that
Aberdeen will move for
Liverpool's out-of-favour
Czech Republic midfielder
Vladimir Šmicir in the summer. The move has been instigated by the Dons' new signing Lubomir Blaha, who has been close friends with Šmicer since their days in the Czech Under-21 International side.
Jimmy Calderwood let it slip in an interview with Dutch magazine 'Voetbal International' earlier this week that a move for Šmicer may be on, and was forced to make a statement yesterday. "We had been alerted to the availability of Šmicer previously, but it was only when big Lubomir arrived at the club did we realise a move could be possible. I can't say too much as he is still under contract but the board are attempting to round the money up to seal the deal."
Blaha told Aberdeen-Mad, "Vladi played in a friendly for Liverpool at Aberdeen last year, and he raved about the playing surface, the family atmosphere and the set-up. It was he who eventually persuaded me to follow up Aberdeen's initial interest at the beginning of the season, but I decided to stay with Slovan Liberec. Now I am here, and Vladi is keen to move here also."
Šmicer has started only 8 games for Liverpool this season scoring no goals, but has played 3 times for the Czech Republic, scoring once, in that time. In a lengthy international career, the 31-year-old has scored 25 goals in 72 international matches.
