Three thousand travelling Dons fans were in Edinburgh this afternoon as the Dons kicked off the 2002/03 SPL campaign against Bobby Williamson's Hibernian at Easter Road.
Dons boss Ebbe Skovdahl sprung a surprise preferring Derek Young upfront to Leon Mike. Young was partnered by Darren Mackie, with Mike settling for a place on the subs bench.
Aberdeen failed to settle in the 1st half with some strong tackles going flying in from the Hibs players, mainly on Kevin McNaughton who was taken late on a couple of occasions.
The Dons had a lot of possesion but failed to do much with it and not creating any real chances - the nearest the Dons came to hitting the back of the net was in the 23rd minute - Mackie had looked set to race clear of the Hibs backline but was denied by a late offside flag.
The home side took the lead in controversial fashion in the 32nd minute - when referee Toner - not for the first or last time - angered the large and vocal Dons support by failing to award a free kick for a foul on Roberto Bisconti. Hibs moved forward with O'Neil setting up Luna who put the ball past Kjaer and into the net.
In the 36th minute - Mackie astonishingly some how managed to fire over from close range - but the strikers blushes were saved by an offside flag.
In the closing minutes of the half McGuire both headed over the bar from a Thornley corner and picked up a head knock in a seperate incident as the Dons went in trailing. The 1-0 lead for Hibs was just about deserved on the balance of play.
As the 2nd half started the Dons looked like a revitalised team and went at Hibs from the off with Canadian goalkeeper Tony Caig looking shaky.
Five minutes into the half and the home fans breathed a sigh of relief when Roberto Bisconti passed up a gilt edged chance to equalise for the Dons.
After a good passing move Bisconti missed for 6 yards when it looked easier to score.
Following a spell of Dons dominace, Aberdeen got a much deserved equaliser in the 64th minute. However just as Hibs' opener could have been disallowed so could have this goal. Derek Young appeared to use his arm to control the ball as he managed to get it to Darren Mackie who fired past the advancing Caig.
This sparked Hibs to life as Russell Anderson - who is sure to have impressed the watching Berti Vogts - saved the Dons from going behind again with a great tackle to get the ball away when Paco Luna looked like scoring his and Hibs' 2nd.
Luna was booked soon after for a late challenge on Anderson.
The Dons received a major blow when Kevin McNaughton was knocked out after an accidental collision with Allen Orman. Surprisingly a section of the Hibs support decided that the young Scotland international was wasting time and decided to boo him.
However he was eventually put into a neck brace and onto a stretcher and to their credit a sizeable number of Hibs fans applauded the youngster, who was replaced by Chris Clark.
The game seemed to dull down a good bit after this and it seemed that it was going to end in a 1-1 draw. The 4th official however signalled 5 minutes of injury time which saw Hibs up the ante and really go for it - Peter Kjaer kept the Dons in the game with a magnificent save from Tom McManus and Eric Deloumeaux cleared off the line from the resulting corner.
The time added was strecthed even longer due to an injury to Darren Mackie who was replaced by Fergus Tiernan.
THe DONS for the third game in succesion against Hibs won it with a goal right at the death - this time Chris Clark snatching the winner as the Hibs defence fell asleep.
