Aberdeen 2 Motherwell 2

Motherwell will undoubtedly be the happier of the two camps this evening, especially as they had looked dead and buried at two-nil down as half-time approached.

However, credit is due to them for the resilient way in which they fought their way back into the match before they earned a deserved share of the points.

After 11 minutes the visitors were first to show when Phil O'Donnell won good possession in midfield, before finding Ritchie Foran, who drifted inside Alex Diamond before unleashing a fierce drive which Jamie Langfield did very well to tip over the crossbar.

It was the Dons who took the lead minutes later when a Jamie Smith cross fell to Ferne Snoyl, whose shot was blocked by Stephen Craigan into the path of Scott Severin who fed the ball out to Chris Clark. His rocket shot from 35yards could only be parried by Colin Meldrum into the path of Steve Lovell, who gleefully slammed the ball into the unguarded net.

Motherwell piled forward in search of an equaliser and twice in a matter of minutes deserved to be on level terms. Firstly after 15 minutes, Martyn Corrigan made a great run beyond The Dons defence before driving the ball across six-yard box where it was only just missed by the in-rushing O'Donnell.

Then with the home side's defence in disarray, Scott McDonald was only just off target with a snap-shot from 20 yards after turning away from Russell Anderson.

After 22 minutes Meldrum did very well to touch a Jamie Smith shot just around the post at the expense of a corner. From the resultant kick, Lovell was on hand to knock a Diamond flick into the back of the net for Aberdeen's second goal with the visitors' defenders appealing for offside.

Aberdeen's Russell Anderson was penalised for a foul on Scott McDonald. The free-kick was played into the area by Steven Hammell, whose cross found centre-back Brian McLean. He rose unchallenged at the far post to give the visitors hopes of getting back into the match as his header looped over Langfield and into the corner of the net.

Disaster struck for Aberdeen upon the restart when following a tremendous stop by Langfield, Gary Dempsey needlessly tripped Hammell inside the penalty box leaving Foran to calmly knock home the resultant kick to bring the sides level again.

Aberdeen should have gone ahead after 64 minutes when a swerving Snoyle corner was missed by both Lovell and Diamond when it looked easier to score.

The game then became very fraught and frantic with neither side creating any worthwhile chances as the game petered out and earned both sides a valuable point.
