The 32-year-old former Scotland international was a second-half substitute in Tuesday night’s 3-3 draw against Sheffield United.
But he has found himself on the outside looking in for much of the campaign at the DW Stadium, after his pre-season was wrecked by injury and a bout of appendicitis.
Cowie’s appearance off the bench against the Blades was only his seventh of the season, with David Perkins and Max Power having cemented both central midfield slots.
His only two starts in the league came in the 0-0 draw at Southend in late November and the 1-0 home defeat to struggling Blackpool in early December, when he was replaced at half-time.
And with his contract up at the end of the season, Cowie could see a move north of the border as a way of kickstarting his career.
The Dons are desperately seeking midfield reinforcements, with captain Ryan Jack and ex-Manchester City player Willo Flood out with long-term injuries.
Given the fact Cowie’s wife hails from Aberdeen, it would make a deal an attractive proposition for all parties.
Cowie’s wages would be the major stumbling block to any deal, with the Scottish outfit hoping to pay only part of his not-inconsiderable salary.
Latics, of course, would be reluctant to subsidise any deal too much, for a player who played alongside Gary Caldwell at international level and is still rated highly by the gaffer.
However, Caldwell is also anxious to continue his own squad strengthening during the January window, and must weigh up pros and cons of allowing Cowie - an experienced pro with promotion on his CV - to depart should the Dons firm up their interest.
