Wednesday's Dons News

Dons misfit Steven Craig has joined Bradford City on trial. The 24-year-old is out of favour at Pittodrie and has been told he can leave the club despite featuring in the friendly at Huntly last week.

Craig could find himself linking up with former Dons favourite Dean Windass at the club, and Bradford City boss Colin Todd told the Telegraph & Argus, as reported on bbc.co.uk, "We will have a look and see what transpires. If we need to take it further at the end of the week then we will do. He is out of the equation at Aberdeen so this is a chance for us. We have got four strikers at the moment with Danny Forrest and three senior players but competition is what you need."

Meanwhile, Aberdeen have reacted to idle media speculation at the weekend by warning that defender Zander Diamond is not available for transfer. Some newspapers reported that there is interest in the Scotland U-21 captain from Celtic. A club spokesman told bbc.co.uk: "We have received nothing official from any club regarding the player. But the manager says that the player is not for sale at any price and that's the end of the matter."

20-year-old Diamond has been a revelation at Pittodrie since he burst onto the scene last year, and speculation had suggested that Celtic boss Gordon Strachan was interested as he attempts to strengthen his own defence, particularly if brutal defender Bobo Balde were to move on. However, there is no sign of that transpiring with Balde playing in the Hoops' 0-0 draw at Leicester last night.

Aberdeen's latest Dutch friendly saw another experimental team take on De Graafschap at Aalten last night. The match ended 0-0, but Jimmy Calderwood was clearly trying out a few options and targeting a few players' weaknesses with positional changes.

For example, Ricky Foster and Jamie Winter have been criticised by fans for lacking physical presence and tackling ability, and yesterday both players found themselves starting in defence - Foster at right-back and Winter in the centre of defence with Andrew Considine. This presumably is as much about strengthening the players' mental and physical aggression as it is about trying out positional options.

The only other highlight of a dour encounter was the pre-season debut of striker Steve lovell. The Dundee hitman eased himself into the team with 70 minutes of action before being replaced by Dutch trialist Rob Haveman.

Aberdeen: Preece, Nicholson (Adams), Byrne, Winter, Considine, Clark, Smith, Dempsey, Lovell (Trialist - Haveman), Stewart, Foster (Macaulay). Subs not used: Langfield, Mendy
