The experienced Dons striker has played a back-up role to frontline strikers Niall McGinn and, since January, Adam Rooney.

But Vernon has played a crucial part in several wins this season, with a League Cup hat-trick against Falkirk and key penalties in the two shoot-outs in that competition, plus turning the game in the previous fixture at Easter Road against next Monday's opponents Hibernian.

30-year-old Vernon is one of several players whose contracts are due to run out at the end of the season, including captain Russell Anderson and midfielder Barry Robson - who are set to be tied to new deals.

Vernon said: "I love playing for the club and I enjoy coming to work at Pittodrie every day.

"I'm happy at Aberdeen and my family are settled up in this part of Scotland. My wife just had another baby and I would prefer not having to uproot them again.

"I'm not afraid to admit I also want to play a lot more than I have this season."
