The penalty decision, which ironically outraged Hundee boss John Brown, consigned the Dens Park side to the First Division next season.
Aberdeen winger Pawlett drove into the box and went down under a challenge from Toshney in an incident that is seen week in, week out but for some reason has led to a media backlash against the young forward.
But McInnes has come out to defend the player, and hopefully put the spotlight back on Brown's team's failings and their manager's obnoxiousness.
"I'm not sure who it was who came in and hit Peter," said McInnes. "He tried to slow down, but for me, there was contact - but I need to stress that I haven't seen it again."
"From 80 yards away and the pace it was going, I did think there was contact made.
"The ref and linesman were ten yards away and gave it instantly."
