The Dons' distant hopes of overhauling Celtic at the top of the league came to an end with defeat to Dundee United yesterday.
However McInnes believes that the achievement of taking a club with the resources of Celtic into May until they sealed the title should not be underplayed.
He said: "There is a sense of disappointment from the players in the dressing room but I've been telling them time and time again that they should not be disappointed.
"For an Aberdeen team to finish second for the first time in 21 years, it shows you how difficult it is to do."
