ABERDEEN have been foiled in their attempts to sign Blackburn midfielder Jason Lowe.
Rovers have decided they cannot afford to loan the teenager despite initial talks with the Dons. But Aberdeen manager Craig Brown is confident of adding to his squad.
"We are still pursuing a player, we think by the deadline we should have something done," Brown said. "This is a defensive player, a midfield player who can play at the back. He is based in England but has experience in Scotland, he's a respected player. It's 90% certain."
He added: "It's not Jason Lowe, we were interested in him but he is required by Blackburn.
"He was on the bench on Saturday, they have a couple of midfield players injured."
Meanwhile, Brown rejected claims that striker Chris Maguire, who is out of contract at the end of the season, was poised for a loan move to England.
However, on-loan Rangers striker Andrius Velicka is set for a move having held talks with Swiss club St Gallen.
"Chris Maguire is here at least until the end of the season and hopefully beyond that," Brown said. "There may be a possibility for Velicka to depart but if it's cross-border he doesn't need to be away.
"There is interest in him, I think it's safe to say he will not play for Aberdeen again this season."
