Sunderland have completed the £100,000 signing of Irish striker Daryl Murphy from Waterford. The highly-rated hitman was being tracked by several clubs including Aberdeen, but the lure of Premiership football next season was enough to swing the vote the way of the Black Cats.

Meanwhile, Greenock kid Michael Paton has signed a one-year full-time deal with Aberdeen with the aim of securing a longer contract with the Dons.

The 16-year-old has been with the club since he was 10, but has now been drafted into the senior squad and must leave his home behind for good as he heads north to pursue his dream.

"It's all I've ever wanted," he told the Greenock Telegraph. "To play professional football is the only thing I've ever wanted to do."

Paton was spotted by Dons scouts when he was playing for boys' team East End United. When asked why he didn't want to join a west of Scotland side he said: "They picked me. You don't turn down an opportunity like this. Aberdeen probably presents one of the best chances to get a first team game anyway."

Michael will head to Portugal with the Dons youth squad at the beginning of next month as they embark on a their pre-season tour.
