The Aberdeen boss wanted to make defender Hector his fourth signing of the summer but that was ended by a new Royals contract.
However McInnes has been told that the 21-year-old full-back could return to Pittodrie on loan again to gain more experience.
Hector returned to the Matejski Stadium in January due to reading's injury woes, and made nine appearances impressing manager Nigel Adkins and fans alike.
Adkins sees him as one for the future but with reading set to recruit in the summer, the Daily Record reports that the Dons have been told there is still a possibility of the defender going out on loan.
