Aberdeen's Director of Football Willie Miller commented. "Having been back at the club for almost a year now, and having examined the youth development operation in detail, I came to the conclusion, in conjunction with Jimmy Calderwood, that it was important that we spread some of the workload, in particular that of Neil Cooper's, if we are to ensure the continuation of regular progression through the ranks, from the elite youth development squads, the under 19's, reserves and, ultimately, the first team. With Neil now free to concentrate on the youth team, where he has enjoyed considerable success, as well as helping with the reserves, Sandy's appointment will assist significantly with that continuity while, as a former top striker himself, he will be an invaluable assistance to our forwards throughout the Club."
Dons boss Jimmy Calderwood added. "Sandy brings with him a wealth of experience at all levels off the field, in particular with the development of young players, and having worked with Jimmy Nicholl and myself at Dunfermline, I know he will be an important addition to the football management team here at Pittodrie."
The 48 year old, who has been in charge at Berwick Rangers since last October, is delighted to be reunited with the two Jimmys. "As far as I'm concerned, this is a fantastic opportunity for me to join a great club such as Aberdeen at a time when they really are on the way back. When Willie and Jimmy approached me, I didn't take a lot of convincing and I can't wait for the new season to come round."
