Not since Zoltan Varga touched Aberdeen's support with his genius has there been as emotional and as brief a stay at Pittodrie than that of Sven Baas. The big defender has just ended his period at the Dons in order to allow in the mercurial talent of Danny Griffin, and the question on everyone's lips is: can 'The Griff' fill the golden boots of 'The Baas'?

The day that Sven signed for the Dons on amateur forms will forever be etched in dyed-in-the-wool Reds' minds. What Aberdeen fan does not remember this report from www.sportone.nl that finally broke the news we were all waiting for?

Sven Baas speelt de komende maanden op amateurbasis voor Aberdeen. De 25-jarige verdediger, die twee weken op proef was bij de Schotse club, was door zijn oude club FC Volendam niet vrijgegeven voordat op 31 augustus de internationale transfermarkt sloot. Hierdoor mag hij tot januari geen profcontract tekenen.

Baas speelde vorig seizoen voor Volendam en stond daarvoor onder contract bij Haarlem. Aberdeen-trainer Jimmy Calderwood toonde respect voor de bereidheid van Baas om een amateurcontract te tekenen: "Het zegt veel over die jongen dat hij hier tot januari wil blijven. We moeten alleen zijn onkosten betalen, dus dat geeft wel aan hoe graag hij een contract wil hebben. Hij moet nu elke gelegenheid aangrijpen om indruk te maken. Baas is een erg sterke verdediger die ons meer mogelijkheden zou geven. Zeker als we op voorsprong staan en die marge moeten veiligstellen."

Reading that again fairly brings a tear to the eye. Now that Sven has left our lives for good (unless there is another injury crisis and he fancies living in Aberdeen for no pay again), all we have to remember him by are his glorious statistics.
