The Daily Record says that Aberdeen have targeted the out-of-contract 29-year-old to lead the line for the Dons.
The Record said: "Aberdeen have made their interest known to [Sutton's] agents."
McInnes has released nine first-team players and with fewer new faces coming in he must focus on filling the right holes.
Sutton would be a direct replacement for New Zealand shoe model Rory Fallon, but with Niall McGinn and Josh Magennis signed up to new contracts, and Scott Vernon with a year on his contract, some fans may feel that there are other areas of the team that need prioritised.
Sutton has played for several clubs in Scotland, with his most successful spells coming at St Mirren, where he hit 25 goals in 64 games, and Motherwell, where he scored 32 in 98 games.
