Preview Of Martin Stewart's Testimonial Between Huntly And Aberdeen

Last updated : 08 July 2005 By Stand Free Ed
Dons boss Jimmy Calderwood cancelled yesterday's afternoon Dons training session due to the number of players suffering from niggling pre-season knocks. He refused to say which players are struggling, but believes it will be difficult to name a side for Martin Stewart's testimonial at Huntly tomorrow.

Jimmy told the Press & Journal: "It is not looking good at the moment and I certainly won't be risking anybody on Saturday. There is nothing serious with any of them, but we can't take any chances, even if it is a testimonial match. Our preparations are geared towards being ready for Dundee United on the opening day of the season.

"We will take stock in the morning and pick a side from there. All the first team players who are fit will be involved. It wouldn't be a problem if the youth team was here, but Neil Cooper has them away in Portugal. It was a great opportunity for the young lads which we couldn't turn down, but it has left us short on numbers at the club."

However, Calderwood is looking for a good showing at Christie Park after a successful week's pre-season training with the squad. He said: "We're looking forward to it. It is our first game back and we are playing a good side in the Highland League champions.

"Any player who spends 14 years with a club in this era deserves to be recognised and we're happy to play a part in Martin's big day. They will be a difficult test for us as they will be looking to get a scalp."

HUNTLY

Richard Bowman
Calm and collected shot-stopper who orchestrates his defence well & is a terrific distributor if the ball. Joined the club permanently from Buckie during summer ‘04 having impressed on his debut for the club in 2003-04 season's Valentines' Day demolition of Deveronvale at Banff.

Alan Redford
Remembered for THAT own goal against Berwick Rangers in the Scottish Cup. Signed from Lewis United Juniors two seasons ago.

Neil Reid
Versatile wing-back/striker in his second spell at the club after turning out for Formartine United and Inverurie Loco Works. Won the Junior League title with Locos in 1995/96. Neil really impressed last season with his no-nonsense style, and ability to find a pass under pressure.

Scott Anderson
Signed for the club in March 2004 after previous spells at Buckie and Deveronvale where he captained the Banffers to their first League crown in 2003. Very skilful defender who can also play at sweeper. Aberdeen F.C community coach.

Ross Campbell
Centre-half who has a distinct likeness to Jeremy Clarkson. Made his debut in July '99 after a spell at Culter. "Cooms" last season became one of the finest penalty takers in the League as well as being a threat at set pieces, and was the deserved winner of the Supporters Player of The Year.

Matt Gairns
In his second spell at Huntly after a few years away when he played with Buckie Thistle then East End. A real grind in the centre of the park. Will cause problems for all opponents.

Gary McGowan
Former Caley Thistle and Brora winger who has become arguably Huntly's first pick winger. Has a great knack in tearing up opponents and is always deadly on free kicks. Became Huntly's first Scotland cap making his debut for the semi-pro side against Wales.

Russell Guild
Inspirational captain who lets his feet do the talking. One time Peterhead target, "Guildy" ended the 2003/04 season as the League's 6th Top Scorer and Huntly's number one a real gem of a season, which ended with a call-up to the Scotland Semi-Pro side, where he debuted against Ireland at Fraserburgh.

Ally Reid
Useful winger signed from Keith last summer. Previously played for the club at the start of the 97/98 season, Ally is a nice crosser of the ball. Very attacking player.

Martin Stewart
Highland League Legend who is well deserving of this Testimonial game. Having joined the club in April 1991, Martin played more than 450 games scoring over 300 goals in the process. Now retired, has served the Club and League well.

Richie Taylor
Huntly's high-profile striker, "Clubs" quickly became popular with the home fans after signing last summer. Formerly with Hermes, Deveronvale, Buckie and Keith he has scored goals for all his teams, and was Huntly's top gun in the league winning season.

THE SUBS (from . . . . .)

Scott Taylor
Man of many clubs, formerly with Buckie Thistle, Keith, Cove Rangers and Inverurie Loco Works. Signed a few weeks ago for on final season in the HFL.

Martin Fellowes
6ft 2 striker signed a few weeks ago from Kilsyth Rangers. Height up front being the obvious reason. As for being a quality striker, time will tell.

Wayne Murdo
Young defender from Banff on the fringes of a breakthrough into the first eleven. Solid at the back, an old head on young shoulders.

Simon Scott
Battling 28 year old full-back who returned to Huntly after a spell at Formartine United Juniors. Quickly became popular with the fans last season with some great displays. Always looks comfortable on the ball, and always a threat going forward. Won the League Championship twice with Huntly in the nineties, and now the noughties.

Gordon Farmer
Another man in his second spell at the club having, albeit briefly, featured for Deveronvale in the second half of last season. Signed originally for the club in July 1999, "Jimmy" has always been a real pain for opposition defenders on the wing with endless pace and energy to drive forward from any blade of grass on the park. Always one to watch, keen to do well, and a nice guy off the park too.

Graham Green
In his third spell at the club after brief trips to Buckie Thistle (on loan) and Dufftown in recent years. Signed from Huntly Amateurs in 1997, "Greener" has played more than 100 games, and memorably scored a hat-trick having come off the bench against Nairn last April a feat which lead to a full-page feature in the Daily Record!

Jerry O'Driscoll
Vastly experienced striker who signed for Huntly from Glentanar two seasons ago, a coup which rewarded with seventeen goals in his first season. Jerry had a previous spell at Dundee where we formed a partnership with Tommy Coyne, and latterly Jackie Dziecaknowski. He also has three Under-21 caps to his name with the Republic of Ireland.

Richard Stainer
24 year old front man, recently linked with a trial at Raith Rovers having scored a second-half hat-trick against them in a 2004 pre-season friendly. Signed from Lewis United Juniors in 2003.

Missing for the Aberdeen game: Darren Shalliker, Mark Gray and Marco De Barros
