ABERDEEN

God knows what happened in the '100 mile Derby' in Inverness on Saturday, they're usually games which make ramming knitting needles into your eyes seem a more preferable past-time. Yet we got a seven goal thriller, including even more bizarrely, a last minute winner from Chris 'Bebo' Maguire who's been more Hollyoaks stunt double than footballer this season.

All of which kept our 'important but naebody's that fussed now we're goin to Hampden' Top 6 chances alive...well just about anyway.

Strangely last week Jimmy Calderwood blamed our faltering Top 6 challenge on the state of the Pittodrie pitch, almost suggesting that our chronic away form and 20 different defensive partnerships had nothing to do with the fact that even if we beat Falkirk 6-0 next Monday it won't be enough unless Killie do us a favour on Saturday.

Yet whilst there's frustration amongst Dons fans that we finally found the right formation and line up too late to salvage our SPL campaign, there is a genuinely a widespread ambivalence to whether make the Top 6 or not.

If we do make it then realistically our role in the final five games will be to act as spoiler to someone else's UEFA/title ambitions and if we fail, then provided we get past Queens at Hampden it's five low level warm up games before we attempt to bring the World's Oldest Trophy back home for the first time in 18 years.

All Red eyes are focused on Hampden next week and hopefully a return on May 24th. And what we're doing in between then? Och who cares!

In fact if Hearts win at Killie on Saturday, Jimmy can play our Under 15 girls side against Falkirk and most Reds wouldnae care as the schadenfreude of denying Mad Vlad's 'Future Champions League winners' a place in the Top 6 would keep us chuckling all the way to Hampden in May.
