ABERDEEN

It's impossible to escape the conclusion that in their recent history Scotland and Aberdeen have charted a similar path of highs and lows. Let's look at the evidence. Between 1978 and 1990 Scotland qualified for four World Cups in what could be classed as a glory era for the nation. At this time, of course, Aberdeen had its own heady days. The two even shared a manager in 1986.

Both footballing entities faded in the early Nineties before having a brief blip in 1995-96 when the Dons won the League Cup before Scotland carried the hopes of a nation into Euro 96.

From that point on there have been entwined tales of tragedy, woe and failure, until the shoots of revival appeared from around 2005. However promising these recent positives have been, they have yet to deliver tangible successes in terms of tournament qualifications for Scotland and additions to the trophy cabinet at Pittodrie.

Just as Scotland seems to be heading on a downward trajectory again due mainly to a lack of width and delivery to the strikers, it seems ironic that a current Dons employee and a former one could provide the answers. Charlie Mulgrew and Barry Nicholson are on fire so far this season, so please Mr Burley give them a chance - because if Scotland go downhill, Aberdeen will come tumbling after.
