Two games in, six points chalked up, no goals conceded. Saturday's performance was a far cry from the demolition of Hamilton but the untidy 1-0 win over St Johnstone - which last season's spineless side would not have achieved - was equally welcome.
Nor was this an example of the beautiful game immortalised by Pele. It was turgid stuff in the main, even Mackie's winner was a scrappy affair, but who cares? It feels good to be top of the league, looking down on eleven also-rans.
Of course, it's far too early to crack open the champers but with Aluko back on form, Hartley bossing the show , a rock-solid defence and a settled formation, things are looking much rosier in McGhee's garden.
Roll on Kilmarnock, I'm sure they'll be quaking in their football boots.
