Dons legend and Director of Football Willie Miller told the Press & Journal: "I don't know if Jamie has become a better player since moving to Holland, but I am confident he will blossom under the present management at Pittodrie. We are building a squad of good, young players here with ambition and I have no doubt Jamie will be a good addition to the squad.
"Jimmy Calderwood and I have agreed we want to attract exciting Scottish players to the club and Jamie fits the bill perfectly. People will say we have been chasing him for a year or that talks have been protracted, but I prefer to think we have planned well, identified our target and had the patience to secure his signature.
"His time in Holland hasn't worked out for one reason or another, but that is not our concern. We know what we are getting and it is a Scottish international who has a bit of quality about him."
In a veiled attack on a previous transfer target, Miller added: "More importantly, he made it clear from early in our discussions he wants to play for Aberdeen."
Smith made 53 appearances for Celtic and played twice for Scotland in 2003, against Austria and the Republic of Ireland. He joins Barry Nicholson and Jamie Langfield as new additions to Calderwood's squad along with mid-season captures Gary Dempsey and Richie Byrne, and the Dons' gaffer will now turn to his striking targets in order to boost the Reds' frontline.
There is no news yet regarding Jamie's squad number at Aberdeen, but it is possible that he will take the number 10 shirt soon to be vacated by Derek Adams.
