The campaign to create a singing section at Pittodrie has reached a critical stage, with a decision on the matter from Aberdeen FC imminent.

The campaign has seen a small drop in interest as the announcement of Craig Brown's retirement, the discussion about his replacement, and the eventual announcement of Derek McInnes as new boss.

But with that out of the way, it is now vital that we turn our attention to the matchday experiance at Pittodrie, specifically a singing section, possible standing area, and reclaiming the Merkland Road 'Paddock' end for noisy supporters.

The campaign is now focusing on the name Merkland Kop to describe an atmospheric Paddock end filled with noisy fans, displays and (in an ideal world) safe standing.

Spion Kop (or Kop for short) is a colloquial name or term for a number of terraces and stands at sports stadiums. Their steep nature resembles a hill near Ladysmith, South Africa, that was the scene of the Battle of Spion Kop in January 1900 during the Second Boer War.

Many great stadiums in the UK have famous 'Kop' ends, including Elland Road, Villa Park, Anfield, and Molineux.

Fans group Dons Supporters Together is to meet AFC vice-chairman George Yule this week, and one of the items up for discussion will be the match day experience and atmosphere at Pittodrie.

DST outlined in their March newsletter: "This includes the campaign to create a singing section within the Merkland Road stand. Fan representatives met with George Yule to discuss this issue earlier this month."

But on top of this meeting, the Twitter feed for updates on the campaign, @MadForTheMerkie, has asked fans to email George Yule about the campaign for the Merkland Kop next season.

It is getting close to decision time so it is crucial that Yule knows the strength of feeling from the fans on this matter as he deliberates on it. Contact him with your thoughts at: george.yule@afc.co.uk
